Maybe you could consider that this horror film is not the best way to start talking about classic cinema in this blog but, in my opinion, this antique publicity card (today, a flyer), from Barcelona, dated from February 1948 is an ”excuse” good enough to talk about this film and, specially about the three main actors: Lana Turner, Ingrid Bergman and Spencer Tracy (from right to left)… and don’t forget the director, the great Victor Fleming (Gone with the Wind or The Wizard of Oz).

Tal vez puedas considerar que este film de miedo no es la major forma de empezar a hablar sobre cine clásico en este blog pero, en mi opinion, esta antigua tarjeta publicitaria es una “excusa” lo suficientemente buena para empezar hablar de este film y, especialmente, sobre sus grandes tres actores protagonistas: Lana Turner, Ingrid Bergman and Spencer Tracy (de derecha a izquierda)… y no olvidemos al director, el gran Victor Fleming (Lo Que El Viento Se Llevó o El Mago de Oz).

First, I would like to mention that this flyer is an original piece from 1948, while the premier of the film in US was in 1941… probably the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and the 2nd World War (1936-1939) could explain the delay…

 

En primer lugar, quisiera mencionar que la tarjeta es una pieza original de 1948, mientras que el estreno en US fue en 1941… probablemente la Guerra Civil Española (1936-1939)  y la 2ª Guerra Mundial (1936-1939) puedan explicar la demora…

Secondly, as you may see in the back of the card, the pass was celebrated in Cinema Texas, located in the neighborhood of Gracia, in Barcelona, 5 minutes walking from my home, today still running but under another name. When I was a child, I used to go to Cinema Texas to see classic films.

En Segundo lugar, como se puede ver en el reverso de la tarjeta, el pase se celebraba en el Cine Texas, en el barrio de Gracia, Barcelona, a 5 minutos andando de mi casa, que tadavía funciona hoy, bajo otro nombre. Cuando yo era una niña, acostumbraba a ir al Cine Texas, a ver los grandes clásicos.

 

You probably know the story of the novel from Stevenson: Dr. Jekyll (Spencer Tracy) has more than one personality…Dr Jekyll and his dark side, Mr. Hyde, the evil that runs after Dr. Jekyll drinks a potion… both sides completely opposed. This is the story, but I won’t continue talking about it… see the film if you wish to know the end (which is not exactly the same of the novel). From right to left you can see Lana Turner, Ingrid Bergman and Spencer Tracy… so, following this order, I will dedicate this post to Lana Turner (born Julia Jean Mildred Frances Turner, on February 8, 1921), the great femme fatale, the glamorous woman, the superb beauty…she reached the height of her fame in the 1940s and 1950s., specially with the classic film-noir The Postman Always Rings Twice, a film where she was an adulterous wife, still today remembered as one of the most seductive roles ever made.

Problemente conocéis la novela de Stevenson: Dr. Jekyll (Spencer Tracy) tiene más de una personalidad… Dr. Jekyll y su lado oscuro, Mr. Hyde, el diablo que aparece después de que el Dr. Jekyll se tome una poción… ambas personalidades completamente opuestas. Esta es la historia, pero no continuaré hablando sobre ésta… tendréis que ver el film si queréis saber el final (que no coincide exactamente con la novella). De derecha a izquierda podéis ver a Lana Turner, Ingrid Bergman y Spencer Tracy… por lo tanto, y siguiendo este orden, mi post de hoy va dedicado a Lana Turner (nacida Julia Jean Mildred Frances Turner, el 8 de febrero de 1921), la gran mujer fatal, la mujer glamurosa, la belleza…alcanzó el máximo de su fama en los años 40-50, especialmente gracias al clásico del cine negro “El Portero Siempre Llama Dos Veces” un film en el que interpretaba a una esposa adúltera, que todavía hoy se recuerda como una de las interpretaciones más sensuales de la historia. 
 

She said about her life: ”The thing about happiness is that it doesn’t help you to grow; only unhappiness does that” … the fact is that her daughter, Cheryl, killed Lana’s lover, Johnny Stompanato, during an argument of the couple, she said trying to protect Lana. That was a real scandal. Lana was a femme fatale, but not only as an actress…

Ella dijo sobre su vida: “La felicidad no te hace crecer; solo la infelicidad lo hace”…el hecho es que su hija, Cheryl, mató al amante de Lana, Johnny Stompanato, durante una discussion de la pareja, tratando de proteger a Lana. Aquello fue un auténtico escándalo. Lana era una mujer fatal, no únicamente como actriz.
